Bespoke Conservatory Roofs - Retaining Charm

Not every conservatory needs to be ripped out and rebuilt. Some are simply too special for that — with elegant lines, original timber rafters, or beautifully shaped roof frames that deserve to stay.

At 2Hot2Cold Ltd, we believe that the best upgrades are those that work with your existing structure, rather than against it. In this blog, we explore how a bespoke solid roof upgrade can radically improve comfort and energy performance while retaining the charm and character of your original conservatory or orangery.

A Conservatory with Character

Take a look at the conservatory featured in these images.

From the outside, the crisp white glazing bars, tall gable frame and symmetry of the double doors create a classic garden-room look. Step inside, and it’s even more striking: soft green timber frames, a soaring vaulted ceiling, and elegant fanlight detailing that bathes the room in natural light.

The owners didn’t want to lose any of that charm — but like many older conservatories, the space had become too hot in summer, too cold in winter, and too noisy during rain. Rather than demolishing and starting again, they asked us to retain what made the room beautiful… and quietly fix what didn’t work.

The Smart Way to Upgrade a Conservatory Roof

This project is a great example of what we call a bespoke roof upgrade. The existing timber rafters were thoughtfully preserved, while we installed a solid insulated roof system above. The internal ceiling was then plastered to match the angle of the original roofline, creating a bright, fresh look — but keeping the vaulted shape that made the space feel open and spacious.

We also retained the full-height window layout, ensuring that light still floods the room and connects the indoors with the garden beyond.

The result? A room that’s:

  • Warmer in winter
  • Cooler in summer
  • Quieter when it rains
  • And still full of character

When Should You Retain Original Rafters or Frames?

Not every conservatory is built the same, but many older structures — especially orangeries or bespoke hardwood frames — were built with incredible care. If your space includes any of the following, it’s well worth asking us about a sympathetic upgrade:

  • Painted or natural timber rafters
  • Vaulted ceilings or gable ends
  • Georgian or Victorian-style glazing
  • Orangery roof lanterns or decorative cresting
  • Brick dwarf walls with hardwood framing

Custom Roof Options to Suit Period Properties

Our bespoke tiled roofs can be finished with your choice of Tapco Slate which offer the look of a traditional roof while being far lighter than concrete or clay.

We also offer:

  • Plastered vaulted ceilings or simple flat ceilings
  • Rooflights or skylights for added brightness
  • Downlights and coving for a decorative finish
  • Repainting of timber elements to freshen the colour scheme while maintaining period charm

Every roof is made-to-measure and installed by the team at 2Hot2Cold - we understand the importance of working with what’s already there.

Why We Love These Character-Retaining Projects

There’s something truly special about helping a homeowner fall back in love with their conservatory — especially when it means keeping the features that made it unique.

In this project, the painted rafters, gable detailing and original layout were all celebrated, not covered up. The green framing invites the outdoors in, and the solid roof means the family can now use the space every day of the year.

If you’ve got a space that’s packed with potential but let down by its temperature or acoustics, we’d love to help.
